The Editor's Bit

When I was trying to decide what to put on this month’s cover, I turned to the Stun’s back issues for inspiration. We’ve had Chinese horoscope themed covers for January before, but the year of the rooster didn’t appeal to me. As it’s 2017, tram 17 passing one of our advertisers was a strong contender until I thought about standing in the cold, waiting for the right tram to come along and then hope I can get a decent shot while it speeds past me.

In the end, I went with my current favourite, the Amsterdam Light Festival! Even though it was on the January 2015 & 2016 covers, it’s different every year and starts in December, so I have plenty of time to decide what I like and take photos when it suits me.

This year’s shortlist was between Bridge of the Rainbow by Leidsegracht and Bunch of Tulips by Thorbeckeplein. After I’d taken the photos, I asked Tineke in the Flying Dutchman which one she preferred; she picked the rainbow, so that’s what I went with.

Talking of Tineke and photos, I took time out from working on last month’s Stun to go to her 50th birthday party in the Flying Dutchman; the photos are on page 18. I didn’t bother with captions, but went for bigger photos instead.

I did the same on page 19 with the photos from Café Oporto’s Christmas party, where I stayed much longer than planned on the night before I went to England to spend Christmas with my family. Everybody pictured knows who they are anyway, including Jennie, who kindly shared her photos of Christmas dinner in Molly Malone’s. They’re on pages 26 & 27.

Nuala sent us the photos on page 10 of the Molly Malone’s crew on their staff party, so I couldn’t refuse her request for a selfie of us outside Café Oporto on New Year’s Eve.
